About Research at HHS
Ranked third in Canada for hospital based research, Hamilton Health Sciences is world renowned for its advancements in the prevention and treatment of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and the health of children and the elderly. Research at HHS revolves around specialized areas of programming with institutes, centres and teams integrating their research within the broad scope of the HHS health care system. There are three research institutes at HHS: The Population Health Research Institute (PHRI), the Escarpment Cancer Research Institute (ECRI) and the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute (TaARI). There are also two research centres: the Geriatric Education and Research in Aging Sciences (GERAS) Centre, and the Offord Centre for Child Studies (Offord). HHS Research has over 400 researchers, 200 research students and nearly 1,200 research support staff. The institutes and centre are jointly constituted between HHS and McMaster University.

The Opportunity

This is an outstanding opportunity for a seasoned researcher to advance the research enterprise at HHS. Reporting to the Executive Vice President Academic and Chief Medical Executive (EVP/CME), the VP, Research will provide strategic direction and overall operational leadership to the Research Portfolio at HHS including research institutes, centres and groups, in partnership with the McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences. This leader will act as a key liaison with the McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences and will be responsible for executing specific priorities identified in a recent governance review.
As a member of the senior executive team, the VP, Research will provide linkages between the portfolio priorities and overall HHS strategic priorities, and lead a team of three Directors and five joint institute and centre Executive Directors.
A respected leader, the VP Research has a demonstrated history of personal integrity and collaboration, working to foster a culture of research excellence. The successful candidate will be a front-runner in the field of research and research administration.
They will have demonstrated outstanding interpersonal skills and experience leading and facilitating complex change in a comparable organization. The role will work collaboratively with the Vice Dean, Research, Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University and internal research/administrative leaders to strategically advance the research agenda.  In addition, this role will partner closely with the emerging Innovation portfolio at the Hospital whose mission is to realize the benefits of research and clinical services. 
The successful candidate will have:
  • Academic credentials consistent with industry practice (PhD from an accredited institution or equivalent)
  • Progressive leadership experience in a comparable role, acquired in an academic health sciences organization or regional health authority, or within an organization of similar scope and complexity
  • A significant record in obtaining funding for research and in research publications
  • Credibility as a researcher and leader of a research team with progressive senior management experience accumulated within a complex organization
  • Eligibility for an academic appointment with McMaster University
  • Extensive experience leading and facilitating complex change
  • Experience facilitating high-level multidisciplinary group decisions
  • Current or recent experience in an academic environment
  • A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and the ability to develop and maintain positive, effective working relationships both internally and externally
  • A proven ability to lead and motivate a leadership team
  • Understanding of how to achieve results in an academic environment
  • Ability to analyze financial implications of new business opportunities and new programs to ensure economic feasibility
