West Park Healthcare Centre helps patients get their lives back by providing inpatient, outpatient and outreach services in specialized rehabilitative and complex care after a life-altering illness or injury such as lung disease, amputation, stroke, and traumatic musculoskeletal injuries.  By 2023, West Park’s 27-acre site will be transformed into an integrated campus of care, including a new hospital building and additional community supports such as assisted living for persons with disabilities and seniors.  This transformation enables the Centre to evolve its rehabilitative programs and strengthen links to community-based services to meet the future healthcare needs of our local community and the province.

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
  • Basic Infection Prevention and Control course or must commit to completing course within one year of commencing employment
  • Member of Infection Prevention and Control-Canada (CHICA-Canada) preferred
  • 3 years’ experience in health care preferred
  • Current Certificate of Competence – Ontario College of Nurses
  • Control (CIC) or will obtain within 2 years
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations under the Act for healthcare and residential facilities
  • Knowledge of WHMIS, Workers ‘Safety and Insurance Act, Public Hospitals Act and Health Protection and Promotion Act
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Intermediate computer skills (Word, Excel)
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • 3 years related experience in Infection Prevention and Control or Public Health preferred
  • Evidence of good performance history and attendance record
  • Ability to work in a manner that exemplifies the centre’s core values and helps patients get their life back
  • Should be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients, residents, students, employees, volunteers, physicians and visitors
  • Assists the IPAC Team in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the Infection Prevention and  Control Program through the development of policies and procedures, and designing/conducting education programs to control, reduce and/or prevent the spread of infection for patients, staff, volunteers patients, families and visitors,
  • Assists the IPAC Team to develop and implement the 3 year department plan.
  • Responsible for implementing the recommendations arising out of the Infection Control Committee including providing reports related to their data needs.
  • Collaborates with all departments and services to ensure compliance with applicable Infection Control legislation, guidelines and protocols
  • Assists the IPAC Team to review, analyze and implement regulations, standards and/or guidelines of applicable government agencies and professional organizations-Review of Best Practice Guidelines, OHA recommendations.
  • Rotates with the Infection Prevention and Control Practitioners (ICPs) to remain on-call outside of normal working hours to ensure timely and effective response related to infection control issues
  • Maintains a knowledge base of current IPAC information and best practices
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation standards of practice
  • Assists the IPAC Team to conduct surveillance to monitor the effectiveness of prevention and control strategies and provides suggestions for improvements
  • Conduct audits to assess compliance with Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures eg. Hand hygiene compliance, Central Sterilization and Processing Department, effectiveness of cleaning procedures in patient care areas.
  • Prepare patient safety and quality reports for the Medical Advisory Committee, Infection Prevention and Control Committee, Risk Management, Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, Senior Management, Board of Directors, Balanced Score Card and managers monthly/quarterly/annually by gathering, trending and analyzing data.
  • Collaborates with IPAC Team to report all mandatory patient safety indicators, internally and externally.
  • Attends/presents pertinent Infection Control Information/Reports to committees as deemed necessary e.g. Medical Advisory Committee, Quality Committee
  • Works collaboratively with the IPAC Team in developing, delivering and evaluating educational programs related to infection control for staff, patients, physicians, volunteers, students and visitors as appropriate.
  • Provides expert knowledge and guidance in infection prevention and control and epidemiology
  • Consult with healthcare providers, physicians, managers and directors throughout the Centre assisting them to identify and reduce infection risks.
  • Participates in hospital committees as required.
  • Assists the Department of Occupational Health and Safety in ensuring compliance with applicable infection control legislation, guidelines and protocols. This involves keeping abreast of changes, developing and implementing policies and procedures, consulting with managers to ensure they include infection control principles in their policies and procedures, provide consultation services to the Joint Health and Safety Committee as required.
  • Be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients, students, employees including:
  • Compliance with the safety standards of the hospital and applicable legislation
  • Identification and prevention of safety issues and problems
  • Taking corrective action, where possible
  • Attendance at safety meetings/training/updates in accordance with the Centre’s standards e.g. fire training and other mandatory education
